GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Mar. 25, 2016–Hans Peter Minderhoud on Glock’s Flirt rode to a narrow victory over the two hometown favorites in the World Cup Final Grand Prix Friday, to set up a showdown in the global Freestyle title in two days.
Aiming for his first World Cup title, the Dutch Olympic and World Games medal rider and the 15-year-old Swiss Warmblood stallion scored 76.871 per cent in the Grand Prix at this 11,000-seat stadium hosting the 31st year of the World Cup Final.
Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvén, a six-time Olympian, was second on Don Auriello on 76.500 per cent with fellow Swedish team rider Patrik Kittel on the 17-year-old Watermill Scandic in third on 76.357 per cent, just 0.514 per cent behind the winning combination.
Hans Peter, riding in his seventh World Cup Final and second on Flirt–the pair were at Las Vegas in 2015–began competing this horse at Big Tour in the summer of 2014.
Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvén, like Patrik Kittel, looking to become only the second Swedish World Cup champion–Louise Nathorst on Walk On Top won the title in this same city in 1998–came into this Final well prepared after the winter with the 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding in Florida. Tinne and Don Auriello were on Sweden’s team at the 2012 Olympics, 2014 World Games and 2013 and 2015 European Championships.

Scandic, a KWPN stallion that Patrik rode on the Swedish team at the 2012 Olympics, is the senior Grand Prix mount in the German-based rider’s lineup that includes some spectacular younger Big Tour horses such as Deja. However, Scandic returned to top form this World Cup season despite his age.
Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB, a 15-year-old KWPN stallion and highest in the world rankings at No. 5 in this competition, were fourth on 75.257 per cent. The pair won the bronze medal at the Final in Las Vegas last year.
The scoring from the ground jury of seven–two more for some championships than the five typical of judging panels–showed widely different placings for Hans Peter and Flirt–with three placing the pair first with two scores of 78.900 per cent, two in second on 76-plus per cent, one in third on 76.100 per cent and Swedish judge Gustav Svalling, also president of the ground jury, awarding 74.400 per cent and eighth place on his rankings.

Inessa Merkulova on Mister X, the Russian-bred Trakehner that four weeks ago was awarded 82.400 per cent in the Grand Prix at an Olympic qualifying CDI3* in Moscow, was scored at 73.957 per cent for sixth place.
Several riders made their World Cup debuts, including Ireland’s Judy Reynolds on Vancouver K, placing ninth on 73.000 per cent. The pair have also qualified Ireland for a start in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.
Charlotte Jorst of Reno, Nevada was also in her first World Cup Final, riding Kastel’s Nintendo for 71.114 per cent to place 11th while fellow American and three-time Olympic team medalist Günter Seidel of Cardiff, California on Zero Gravity were awarded 69.800 per cent for 15th place.

“It felt just wonderfu;,” Charlotte said after the ride. “Nintendo was on fire. It was the best experience. The crowds were just so supportive. They were clapping like crazy. Loved it.”
Auastralia’s Lyndal Oatley rode Sandro Boy in what was their debut Final to score 70.943 per cent for 12th place. Mary Hanna, her Olympic and World Games team mate, rode Pacific League Final winner Umbro to 16th place on 67.929 per cent.

“So proud to represent my home country alongside Mary at the Final,” Lyndal said. “With only a short preparation leading up to the Final I did the best I could and so did Nissa. There are many areas we can do better but otherwise I had a great feeling.
“i’m looking forward to the Final and ready to enjoy the experience. The atmosphere behind the scenes with all the riders has been so much fun and they are all such hard working and passionate–making for a really good atmosphere and a lot of fun.”
