LANGLEY, British Columbia, June 11, 2016–Karen Pavicic rode her Don Daiquiri to the best ever Grand Prix Special result to win the Thunderbird CDI3* Saturday and move into second place on Canada's Olympic rankings with three weeks to the deadline to earn one of the nation's two starting places at Rio de Janeiro.
Karen and the 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding were scored at 72.451 per cent that gave the Canadian World Games team pair a four-score average of 71.142 per cent and enough to vault the duo into second place behind Belinda Trussell and Anton with a big lead atop the standings.
Lauren Thornlow of the United States on Royal Konig was second on 67.314 per cent and Canada's Joni Lynn Peters on Travolta third on 67.137 per cent.
Karen and Don Daiquiri posted a personal best Grand Prix result Friday that moved them from fourth place to third and Saturday's result elevated them up another place, with Megan Lane and Caravella now in third with a four-score average of 70.523 and Chris von Martels on Divertimento in fourth on 70.220.
A Cedar Valley, Ontario CDI3* June 17-19 is the only event remaining in Canada for riders to qualify ahead of the July 3 deadline.
Karen told dressage-news.com she will not go east for the final show and joked, in reference to her experience on the Wellington, Florida winter circuit, “It helps when you don't go off-course.”
She competed Don Daiquiri throughout the three months of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington over winter then at Tryon, North Carolina and the World Cup test event at Omaha, Nebraska last month.
She put the performances at this event down to “great supportive environment riding at home” in South Surrey, British Columbia.
