To watch Kasey Perry-Glass ride Dublet on to America's Olympic team she has appeared focused and cool heading to the biggest competition of her life after just five months at top sport. But since coming to Europe as part of the U.S. squad competing for one of the four places on the team for the Rio Games she admits going through a roller coaster of emotions.

“In my training I always have it in my mind that we have come so far in a short amount of time,” said Kasey. “I've always dreamed about being in this spot, but making it a reality is kind of surreal.

”I'm so in shock I'm here. But Dublet is happy and healthy. He's smart, smart and lazy who lays down a lot.”

He has also won the admiration of judges, the panel in France awarding the pair 77 per cent that was the highest Grand Prix score for any American combination in Europe this year although just starting Big Tour.

Dublet has no trouble relaxing wherever he is as this photo provided by Kasey Perry-Glass shows the horse having made himself a pillow of the shavings to make himself comfortable.

Dublet has no trouble relaxing wherever he is as this photo provided by Kasey Perry-Glass shows the horse having made himself a pillow of the shavings to make himself comfortable.

Kasey was giving herself 24 hours to be in tears with the excitement of being selected for the team, or as she put it, “letting loose a little bit with my emotions.”

“Surreal” is understandable-she is the youngest rider at the age of 28 on the team with three-time Olympian Steffen Peters on Legolas, Laura Graves on Verdades that were team mates at the 2014 World Games and Allison Brock who also has not competed at major championships but went as a groom for Susan Blinks on Flim Flam that was owned by Fritz Kundrun as is Rosevelt.

Before coming to Europe two months ago, Kasey's U.S. team experience was on Nations Cups at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington Florida-on Dublet at small tour in 2015 and then at Grand Prix taking gold this year.

In Europe, she and the 13-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding (Diamond Hit x Olympic Ferro) led the U.S. team to victory in the Nations Cup at Compiègne, France and was part of the silver medal team at Rotterdam.

Kasey says she doesn't get nervous at competitions and is used to the gypsy-like experience as she has been living out of a suitcase for most of the past two years–training that took her from her home in Orangevale, California to both sides of the country and to Europe last year before deciding to settle in Wellington to work full time with Debbie McDonald, who also trains Laura Graves. In addition to being regarded today as one of the top coaches anywhere, Debbie has been there, done that winning medals at one of her two Olympics, at both World Games and the fist American to claim the World Cup title.

“Everyone has some type of nerves when it comes to this kind of elite performance,” Kasey confided to dressage-news.com, “hearing a lot about the atmosphere at these big events. I told myself not to be nervous but to take my time and make double sure my attitude is positive.”

The length of time away from home will end up being greater than any previous American team–it's already two months and by the end of the Olympics in mid-August it will be up to four months.

And having just Dublet she tends to “hyper focus” all her attention on the horse that can be emotionally draining on a bad day.

“I think you have to be mentally tough to be in this kind of situation.

“I've always been very determined and passionate about the things I'm working toward. It comes a lot from my dad who pushed me and helped me adapt through basketball and college.

“My personality is to keep going and find solutions to problems. If I am having a hard time I find ways to get out of that mental rut.”

Kasey credits her family and Debbie's experience and always available ear “of working me through my emotions” along with her team mates giving her the extra push to succeed. She's also working out a lot with her sister, Holly, who is grooming for Kasey.

Although her father is a psychologist, Kasey has pursued hypnotherapy that she says has helped a lot in dealing with her emotions.

She admits she was “nervous about my husband coming, it was a change of routine. I hadn't seen him in three months. I was hypnotized not be nervous, I woke up and said, 'OK'.”

In preparing for Rio de Janeiro, Kasey has concerns about the Zika virus and has researched blood tests she can take, but… “I hate to say it but you can't really pass up the Olympics.”

“You have to enjoy the experience of riding for your country. It's not just Global (Dressage Festival) any more.

“It's exciting to be with the team every day that is so encouraging, keeping our heads straight and not being over zealous though we want to be on the podium.

“We're having so much fun.”

Watching the “masters” Günter Seidel on Zero Gravity as well as Steffen and Shelly Francis that will be the traveling reserve on Doktor she describes as “awesome.”

Laura, Ali and herself “all have own personalities and do feed off each other to motivate each other positively. I don't know how this team got so lucky to have such a good atmosphere.

“I think it's very exciting for the USA.”

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, June 27, 2016–Julie Brougham and Vom Feinsten were named Monday to the individual start for New Zealand at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in six weeks.

Julie is only the third New Zealander ever to qualify in dressage for the Olympics.

Julie on the 13-year-old Rhinelander gelding won the 2015 New Zealand Horse of the Year title. The duo  have been in Europe since March to prepare for the Games.

“Now we can focus 100 per cent on the preparation and training for the Games,” she said.

USA to Announce Olympic Team With Other Dressage Nations Following Soon After

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 26, 2016–The United States dressage team for the Olympics will be announced within the next couple of days with other nations declaring teams and individuals in the next three weeks ahead of the July 18 deadline for definite entries for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

The Americans will select their team of four horses and riders and a traveling reserve combination following three events in Europe that ended at Rotterdam this weekend much as it began at Compiègne, France a month ago.

Florida-based Laura Graves on Verdades, Kasey Perry-Glass on Dublet and Allison Brock on Rosevelt CDI3* were the stand out performers in the two selection events in which they participated. As the most experienced and highest ranked rider, Steffen Peters on Legolas punched his ticket to Rio de Janeiro at the second qualifying event in Roosendaal, Netherlands then put the pair at the head of the line at Rotterdam.

Nothing changed at this CDIO5* Nations Cup and companion CDI3* that would seem to change the calculations in selecting a team that probably has the best shot at returning the United States to the podium since the last Olympic medal performance, bronze, at Athens in 2004 for the fourth straight Games.

The only question would appear to be the reserve–Arlene “Tuny” Page on Woodstock or Shelly Francis on Doktor, both Florida-based riders and both with world championship experience.

Rotterdam was also the second of two selection events for Australia, that has a team berth for Rio, but encounters enormous distances and competition experience between the riders at home Down Under or based in Europe or the United States. Ccreating a level playing field is next to impossible.

The Australians opted for two selection events in Europe and, subject to veterinary examinations, the top combinations were German-based cousins Kristy Oatley on Du Soleil and Lyndal Oatley on Sandro Boy, the U.S.-based Kelly Layne on Udon P and Mary Hanna, Australia-based but with decades of experience competing around the world, on Boogie Woogie. Three other combinations that paid their own way from Australia to vie for a place on the team fell short, according to the unofficial math, and now have to pick up the tab to get back home to a country that has such severe quarantine restrictions it adds significantly more to the bill.

Canada's selection procedures are also scheduled to end this week when Karen Pavicic and Don Daiquiro incurred the cost of flying from the West Coast of North America to compete at Fritzens-Schindlhof, Austria to seek to qualify ahead of the country's July 3 deadline. The last-ditch effort was triggered by controversial circumstances surrounding the last Canadian qualifying event in North America and much-criticized judging that boosted Megan Lane on Caravella into the second starting slot at Rio along with clear leader Belinda Trussell on Anton.

There are not many questions about two of the three powerhouse nations where the teams will be decided at the last minute.

Great Britain, the defending team and individual gold medalists, will announce its team ahead of the Hartpury, England CDI3* Dressage Festival July 7-10.

Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro will be at the lead though the pair have not competed since the European Championships in Aachen, Germany last August but as the holder of all the world score records and the dominant combination for the past four years the feeling is that there is nothing to prove by participating in another show ahead of Rio. Carl Hester, the mastermind of much of Britain's success for several years as well as part-owner of Valegro and coach and mentor of Charlotte, will be on the team with Nip Tuck and Fiona Bigwood, who also works with Carl, will be the third member with Orthilia. Lara Griffith on Rubin al Asad and Laura Tomlinson on Rosalie B, a member of the 2012 Olympic gold medal team and winner of individual bronze, are expected to take the fourth spot or reserve.

Sweden's team will be decided the same week at the Falsterbo Horse Show with six-time Olympian Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvénon on her championship mount Don Auriello and Patrik Kittel on Deja expected to be named.

Germany has a lineup to dream of–world No. 1 Kristina Bröring-Sprehe on Desperados, Isabell Werth, the most decorated Olympian with five gold medals, on Weihegold OLD, Dorothee Schneider on Showtime and, based on results this year, Sönke Rothenberger on Cosmo. Others speak in awe of the possibility that all four combinations already have or are capable of achieving 80 per cent at Grand Prix that would be a first in Olympic history.

The team will be announced during the World Equestrian Festival CHIO in Aachen July 13-17.

Denmark, that was able to field a team by qualifying four individuals, will also announce their team at the same time and Spain is expected to do so at the same time.

The same weekend the Netherlands team will be selected as the Dutch national championships where questions about Edward Gal's rides on Glock's Undercover and Voice will be answered. Hans Peter Minderhoud seems assured of a spot with Glock's Johnson as does Diederik van Silfhout on Arlando with several strong contenders for the fourth spot and reserve.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 25, 2016-The Netherlands won the CDIO5* Nations Cup gold medal Saturday with the United States taking silver and Sweden bronze and the Americans remained firmly at the top of the trans-Atlantic series leaderboard.

Laura Graves on Verdades won the Grand Prix Special and Steffen Peters on Legolas was runnerup in the Freestyle that kept the United States in second place after the Grand Prix as all three phases counted in the event that was the fourth of six Nations Cups. The U.S. won in Wellington, Florida and in France and has a clear lead with two more events to go, in Sweden and Germany in July.

Final standings of the Nations Cup in Rotterdam were 1. Netherlands 460.167; 2. United States 455.649; 3. Sweden 444.573; 4. France 429.961; 5. Great Britain 423.600; 6. Germany, and 7. Belgium.

Laura and her 14-year-old KWPN gelding scored 77.314 per cent to win the Special with the Netherlands' Adelinde Cornelissen on the 19-year-old Jerich Parzival second on 76.725 per cent and Sweden's Juliette Ramel on Buriel, K.H. third on 73.413 per cent.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 24, 2016–Kristy Oatley on Du Soleil equalled their personal best score to win the second of two Australian Olympic selection events with the highest placing in the CDI3* Grand Prix Friday as the Germany-based pair did in the first trial to put them at the top of the standings to go to Rio de Janeiro in six weeks. It will be their fourth Olympics.

In a format that placed enormous costs and extensive stressful travel for horses based outside Europe, the two events became as much an issue of survival and not the even playing field that was proposed.

Lyndal Oatley on Sandro Boy, also based in Germany that had to skip the first event and the Wellington, Florida-based Kelly Layne on Udon P absent from this show, both because of injuries to their horses, achieved results that would appear to place them on the team.

Mary Hanna, an Olympic and world championship veteran who lives in Australia qualified both Boogie Woogie in second place to Kristy on the rankings and Umbro.

If the horses and riders are selected based on Equestrian Australia's published criteria the four horses and riders for the team would be made up of three combinations based outside Australia and one from, Down Under.

Sue Hearn who had traveled from Australia to compete Remmington in the European events wiped out her second place standing with a 68.820 per cent in the first show to turn in the lowest scoring ride of 64.340 per cent that put the pair last in the Grand Prix of 28 horses and riders on Saturday.

The duo tied with Brett Parbery on DP Weltmieser and slightly ahead of Maree Tomkinson on Diamantina for the bottom three places and thus out of contention for the team.

Four of the eight riders in the selection events that were based in Australia as well as Kelly Layne who lives in Florida paid their own expenses to compete in the two shows. The first show was in Odense, Denmark that involved a 10-hour truck drive for visitors as well asthe residents of Europe.

The selectors will consider the results and have the horses undergo mandatory veterinary examination over the next 10 days.

The results of the two selection events:

1 Kristy Oatley, 37 years old, of Hamburg, Germany and Du Soleil, a 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding–69.520 at Odense and 71.320 at Rotterdam for 140.840.

2 Mary Hanna, 61 years old, of Bellarine, Australia and Boogie Woogie, a 10-year-old KWPN gelding–67.54o and 68.000 for 135.540.

3 Lyndal Oatley, 35 years old, of Nottuln, Germany and Sandro Boy, 15-year-old Oldenburg gelding–66.067 (based on the average of three lowest scores as specified in selection criteria) and 68.800 for 134.867.

4 Mary Hanna and Umbro, a 15-year-old KWPN gelding–66.920 and 67.300 for 134.220.

5 Kelly Layne, 41 years old of Wellington, Florida and Udon P, 15-year-old KWPN gelding–67.880 and 65.426 (average three lowest scores) for 133.306

6 Suzanne Hearn, 60 years old from Bowral, Australia and Remmington, 14-year-old Australian gelding– 68.820 and 64.340 for 133.160.

6 Brett Parbery, 44 years old of Penrose, Australia and DP Weltmieser, a 13-year-old Australian Warmblood gelding– 65.180.and 67.980 for 133.160.

8 Maree Tomkinson, 47 years old of Wallan, Australia and Diamantina 4, a 14-year-old Oldenburg mare–66.100 64.640 for 130.740..

USA's Steffen Peters Performs “Best Ride So Far” on Rosamunde to Win Rotterdam CDI3* Grand Prix

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 24, 2016–Steffen Peters and Rosamunde won the CDI3* Grand Prix Friday with what the American declared as the “best ride” on the nine-year-old mare while team mate Allison Brock on Rosevelt placed third.

Steffen and the Westfalen mare ranked 17th in the world scored 75.920 per cent that was their second highest score, surpassed only by 76.820 per cent posted at Burbank, California five months ago and 17 months since launching their Big Tour career.

Emmelie Scholtens of the Netherlands on Apache placed second on 75.780 per cent.

Allison Brock on Rosevelt was third on 73.860 per cent, a performance that likely assures her to be one of four riders and horses plus a reserve combination to be selected for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in six weeks.

The team will be selected early next week.

Steffen most likely will be selected for the U.S. Olympic team on Legolas, his more experienced mount and like Rosamunde owned by Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang.

Clearly excited with the performance in the tree-shrouded competition arena where spectators and photographers are almost at the edge of the ring and a helicopter hovered overhead throughout the rides of both American riders, Steffen said that he had ridden conservatively in his first selection competition at Roosendaal, Netherlands three weeks ago. After arriving from California “Rosie” had so much energy she needed to be calmed down.

“Today she was exactly like she is at home. There was no need to ride conservatively and I went for it and everything worked out. It was clearly the best test she has done so far,” Steffen told dressage-news.com.

Steffen credited the stage of Rosamunde's training for producing these results.

“I'm not exaggerating, we spend hours walking her because she can get so excited in anticipation of the first passage and piaffe; we spend hours in extended walk, collected walk in the snaffle, stretching her. She's one of those horses you simple can't get tired, not that I would even go there. But it's just the walk that she needs to settle down and today she did.

“…all of nine years old…pretty amazing.”

Steffen said he heard the helicopter leaving the warmup arena that was indoors, but Rosamunde did not and it clearly did not bother her.

Ali Brock who rides Rosevelt, also nicknamed “Rosie,” and owned by Fritz and Claudine Kundrun produced another performance that meets the by-word for the pair, “consistent.”

“I had a little bit more horse than I expected,”Ali said later. “I could hardly hold him in the extended trots, though I'm not complaining about that. We've shortened out warm-up after that worked well in Wellington and France.

“He's become this very reliable, consistent guy who knows his job.

“One of the happiest things for me is that he walks out of the arena on the buckle with a big smile on his face knowing he's done a good job.”

Other Americans competing in the CDI3* as part of the Olympic selection process were Arlene “Tuny” Page on Woodstock scored at 70.000 per cent for ninth place, Shelly Francis on Danilo with 69.580 per cent for 10th and Günter Seidel on Zero Gravity on 66.340 per cent in 23rd.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 22, 2016–The United States and Australia began the final selection event for their Olympic teams against stiff competition in the Nations Cup where the Americans are given a shot to defeat the usually powerful Netherlands team on their home field.

Seven countries are fielding teams in the CDIO5* Nations Cup that is in the first year as an official International Equestrian Federation (FEI) series. The United States is ranked No. 1 after winning two of the three events held so far in the six trans-Atlantic competitions.

The United States Nations Cup team with three of the four combinations likely to be on the team for Rio–Steffen Peters on Legolas, Laura Graves on Verdades and Kasey Perry-Glass on Dublet–are being closely watched in the European selection events as contenders for the Olympic podium.

Kasey, at 28 years old the youngest by four months on the American squad of seven riders and nine horses, and her family's 13-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding have posted the highest score of 77.440 per cent so far in the first two selection events.

Steffen Peters on Legolas, a World and Pan American Games top team partnership, scored 76.820 in their one outing in Europe while Laura Graves on her 14-year-old KWPN gelding, posted 75.880 per cent in one of her two starts. Allison Brock on Rosevelt to compete in the companion CDI3*, scored 73.920 per cent in their one Grand Prix that has been the fourth highest result in Europe and in line with the pair's last two competitions in Wellington, Florida.

Other teams expected to vie for top places along with the United States are the Netherlands led this year by World Cup champion Hans Peter-Minderhoud and Glock's Johnson, absent Edward Gal but with Olympic team and individual medal pair and former world No. 1 Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival took gold for the past two years. Sweden that includes the Olympic combination of Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvén on Don Auriello, her 2012 Olympic and 2014 World Games mount, and Patrik Kittel on Deja that he competed at last year's European Championships.

Belgium, France, Germany and Great Britain are the other four teams.

Mary Hanna on Umbro will be the sole pair for Australia in the Nations Cup as the other six remaining Aussie combinations in their last Olympic selection event will compete in the CDI3*.

The U.S. will skip the Nations Cup in Falsterbo, Sweden in two weeks but is entered in the season-ending World Equestrian Festival at Aachen in mid-July. That also will decide the German team for Rio–a squad that could be capable of all four horse and rider combinations producing scores of 80 per cent–which would be a first for the Olympics.

A total of 155 entries from 25 nations have been nominated for dressage at the Olympic Games, according to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) that released the list 45 days for the start in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 5.

The final starting lineup in Rio will be cut to 60 dressage combinations, 10 more than the previous Olympics in London.

The FEI said its nominated entries list was compiled based on information submitted by the National Federations by June 20–a total of 200 combinations–75 in jumping, 65 in eventing as well as the 60 in dressage.

The full list of nominated entries is available by clicking: FINAL – Nominated Entries DRESSAGE

Equestrian action gets underway with the eventing horse inspection on Aug. 5, the same day as the Olympic Opening Ceremony, and competitions in the three disciplines will be staged over 12 days with six sets of medals up for grabs.

For dressage there will be gold, silver and bronze medals for both team and individual competitions.
