Cutbacks in the number of CDIs in the United States next year are led by reductions in California while top tier shows produced by the organizers of Wellington, Florida's Global Dressage Festival at four different locations make up more than half of the American calendar of 21 international events at 3* or above.
The 2017 schedule released by the U.S. Equestrian Federation Thursday listed 21 CDIs, 18 of them 3* or above compared with 26 initially for 2016 but four were later scratched from the lineup and two were lower rated than 3* leaving 20 international events at the top level,
The lineup shows five CDIs for California in 2017, only one a World Cup event, at Burbank in early March, before the Final in Omaha later the same month. Included on the West Coast schedule is a World Cup event at Epona Farms in Thousand Oaks next September, the same venue that last December was awarded the Festival of Champions Grand Prix and Intermediate I divisions but pulled out in July leaving a replacement organizer only a few months to find sponsors and arrange the national championships.
The reduction in California shows is reminiscent of the schedule in 2014 with five CDIs that had led to an expanded organizing group intent on raising the quality of the winter circuit shows. However, high rental charges for show grounds that are well below standards of Wellington and no prize money have made the economic viability of the shows apparently difficult to sustain.
On the other end of the scale, Wellington has listed seven CDIs of four World Cup events, a 4*, a 5* and a Nations Cup with total prize money of about $700,000 at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. Although the show grounds are rated among the best in the world, in the works for 2018 are plans to build even better facilities on the nearby International Polo Club grounds that were bought by the organizing group.
The same organizing group has scheduled two events for the newly built Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina, the same as this inaugural year and a CDI4* again at the New York's Central Park.
A new addition is a CDI3* for the Colorado Horse Park in Parker, also owned and managed by the Wellington organizers, that brings the total number of shows under the same management to 11 out of the total of 21.
Not listed on the schedule is the first of two CDIs at the HITS on the Hudson show grounds in Saugerties, New York.
