LONDON, Dec. 16, 2015–Carl Hester rode Nip Tuck in the “most difficult test possible” to win the London Olympia World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle on a personal best score Wednesday night with Charlotte Dujardin on his former Olympic gold medal mount, Uthopia, runner-up.

Carl Hester and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding that he rode for Great Britain on silver medal teams at both the 2014 World Games and this year’s European Championships, was awarded 83.750 per cent for the new Freestyle based on the TV program Mr. Selfridge. The previous best for the duo was 80.050 per cent at Hartpury, England, the only previous result above 80 per cent in eight Freestyles performed by the pair since starting Big Tour in May, 2014.

Charlotte and Uthopia scored 82.550 per cent, slightly below their previous best of 83.675 per cent at Windsor in May, 2014 which was also the last competition for the pair before this week’s London International Horse Show.

Dutch team rider Hans Peter Minderhoud and Glock’s Flirt, a 14-year-old Swiss Warmblood stallion, placed third on 80.975 per cent, a sliver over the pair’s previous best of 80.950 per cent recorded at the Stockholm World Cup event last month.

It was, however, enough to vault the Dutch championship team veteran to the top of the World Cup Western European League standings after six of nine qualifying competitions leading to the Final in Gothenburg, Sweden Mar. 23-28.

Carl Hester said of his victory: “This is really huge for me. Last night I thought I had a chance and decided to grab it. I was a little nervous as to whether it would come off and to produce a test like that you really have to have a horse on your side. It just goes to show that after 25 years in the job and riding Grand Prix you never really know what you have and Nip Tuck is really turning into something I never thought he was.”

As the defending champion, Charlotte does not get points although her past two World Cup titles were won on Valegro. Under World Cup rules, she can ride any horse in two World Cup Freestyles, is not awarded points and is automatically invited to the Final.

Olympia was her first event in the 2015/16 World Cup series and she is considering next competing Uthopia at Amsterdam at the end of January to fulfill the requirement to earn a start at the Final.

Carl rode Uthopia on Great Britain’s team that won gold at the 2012 Olympics and the 2011 European Championships. He took back the ride for the 2013 Europeans. Charlotte rode Valegro, also part-owned by Carl, in those championships.

Charlotte first took over the ride on Uthopia in 2013 after Carl Hester, her coach and part-owner of the horse, had competed the KWPN stallion for three years.

Great Britain’s Lara Griffith and Rubin Al Asad placed fourth, moving to a new performance level by scoring 78.025 per cent in their third ever CDI Grand Prix Freestyle and the duo’s last competition of the year before heading back to  Florida for the winter circuit.

The previous best Freestyle result for Lara and the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding was 73.625 per cent set two months ago in Maastricht, Netherlands. She made the CDI debut on Rubin Al Asad at last winter’s Global circuit.

Lara rode for Great Britain at a Junior and a Young Rider at European Championships from 2004 through 2009 is an assistant trainer to Laura Tomlinson, the British Olympic team gold medalist whose family owns Rubin Al Asad. Laura and Lara who competed at the Global Dressage Festival for the first time last winter are scheduled to return next month for the lineup of seven CDIs.
