The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) disclosed Wednesday that it is negotiating with Tryon in North Carolina, United States and Samorin in Slovakia to host the 2018 World Equestrian Games but is open to offers from other countries.
The FEI will not re-open the bid process because of only two years remaining but President Ingmar De Vos has been mandated to handle the alternative to Bromont, Canada which dropped out after it was unable to raise money to stage the event.
The FEI is looking for a host to stage the seven disciplines of dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, jumping, reining and vaulting as well as para-dressage for the WEG that is held once every four years, and not split up the championships.
“The FEI remains fully committed to the concept of the World Equestrian Games and believes that this way of organizing world championships across all our disciplines is absolutely right for our sport,” an FEI spokesperson told dressage-news.com.
“If other organizers contact the FEI to express an interest in hosting the games, they will be asked to provide the information through their national federation,” the spokesperson said.
The FEI did not give a timeline for a decision but said, “the FEI will be in a position to provide more details shortly.”
The WEG was created in 1990 and has been staged in Europe except in 2010 when the event was organized in Lexington, Kentucky.
The 2018 WEG was awarded to Bromont in a second-round of bidding after all other bidders dropped out. The Canadian organizers that had not been able to get funding the first time but gave an assurance of funding to win the bid the second time.
