Horse Communities Centered on Wellington Escape Brunt of Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew swirling past Palm Beach. Location of Wellington is shown by black mark.

WELLINGTON, Florida, Oct. 6, 2016–Perhaps the world's densest population of show horses centered on Wellington escaped the wrath of Hurricane Matthew Thursday with winds up to 140 miles/225 km an hour when the storm veered away just 20 miles/32 km from the Florida coast.

The storm, described by the U.S. National Hurricane Center as possibly the most dangerous in a decade, was on track to hit the Palm Beach coast at about nightfall Thursday after devastating communities in Haiti and eastern Cuba.

Millions of residents of coastal areas of Florida, Georgia and South and North Carolina had left their homes to head inland and President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in Florida hours before the category 4 hurricane was projected to make its first landfall on the U.S. mainland at Palm Beach.

The state was in near-lockdown mode by mid afternoon after supermarkets and most gas stations closed after being swamped for days beforehand by residents stockpiling food and fuel.

As the home of the Global Dressage Festival, Winter Equestrian Festival and the International Polo Club the community of Wellington 12 miles/19km inland from the Atlantic coast is home to several thousand dressage, jumper-hunter and polo horses.

Many owners of farms and horses in Wellington and surrounding communities left the area up to two days before Matthew was predicted to arrive. Hundreds of flights into Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami airports were canceled.

The center of the hurricane with winds of about 140 miles an hour and spread at least 100 miles from the center to cover the entire width of the Florida peninsula was projected to make landfall on the Palm Beach coast at about nightfall.

However, Matthew veered slightly east late afternoon and that was enough to keep the center of the storm about 20 miles off the coast. Winds in the Wellington area did not come anywhere near predicted highs and although rain was heavy did not cause flooding  that has been typical of previous hurricanes.

A record number of CDIs–international dressage competitions–is scheduled for 2017 led by the Americas and Europe, as show at the deadline for listing horse shows with the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

The schedule lists 167 shows in 36 countries for 2017, up 5.69 per cent from 158 shows in 2016, according to a dressage-news.com analysis.

The rate of increase was greatest in the Americas where the number of events increased to 40 next year, an increase of 17.647 over the 34 events this year.

The United States dominated with 24 events, the most of any nation in the world, while Brazil with six shows replaced Canada with four shows for second place in the Americas. The total for the region was boosted by three events in Colombia and one each in Guatemala, Mexico and Uruguay.

The number of events for Europe will increase to 111 in 2017, a 6.730 per cent increase over the 104 in 2016, led by Germany with 20, 11 in Russia at its highest ever number, France with 10 and Austria also scheduling the country's most ever with nine as has Belgium with seven. Expansion continues in Central Europe–Hungary with three, Ukraine and Lithuania with two each, Belarus, Slovenia, Estonia and the Czech Republic one each.

Šamorín in Slovakia, which the FEI reports is seeking to host the 2018 World Equestrian Games, has not scheduled an international dressage or eventing competition in 2017 though it lists several endurance, jumping and vaulting competitions.

The number of dressage events scheduled for Oceania dropped to 11 in 2017, nine in Australia and two in New Zealand, from 13 this year.

For Asia, the schedule listed four events next year, down from six this year that also includes the first CDI in mainland China. Africa is scheduled to host a single event in 2017 as it did in 2016.

The deadline for scheduling shows was Oct. 1, but additions, changes and modifications can be made throughout the year.

The number of dressage competitions with significant prize money has increased significantly in the past decade.

From just four CDI5* events–two in Germany and two in France–in 2008, the number has grown to 13 with 11 in Europe and one each in the United States and Qatar that require minimum prize money of 90,000 Swiss francs (US$92,610).

The number of CDI4*s requiring minimum prize money of 24,000 Swiss francs (US$24,700) will increase to 24 next year–22 in Europe, two in the United States–from eight in 2007.

Although significantly smaller in overall numbers of shows than the other Olympic equestrian disciplines of eventing and jumping, dressage has shown growth of 29.457 per cent over the past decade compared with 22.488 per cent increase in eventing shows and 31.320 per cent for jumpers.

However, after increases in the growth of eventing for several years, the number of events staged annually peaked in 2015 at 274 then dropped to 260 this year with 256 scheduled for 2017.

Jumping has shown substantial growth to 696 events scheduled for 2017 up from 677 this year and 530 in 2008.

Judy Reynolds & Vancouver K Wrap Up USA Swing With Victory at Devon World Cup Freestyle

DEVON, Pennsylvania, Oct. 1, 2016–Ireland's Olympic partnership of Judy Reynolds and Vancouver K wrapped up a swing of American competitions by capturing the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night for their fourth victory in four starts.

Judy and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding picked up a maximum of 20 points with their winning result of 77.450 per cent to take back to Europe to give the pair a head start in the World Cup Western European League with the aim of earning a return ticket to America for the final at Omaha next March.

For Judy, based in Germany, and the horse she began competing at Big Tour 2 1/2 years ago the first journey for the duo across the Atlantic has been a triumph. The pair was the first representing Ireland to make it through to the freestyle at an Olympics which they did at Rio de Janeiro in August.

The pair captured both the Grand Prix and the Freestyle at the iconic Central Park Horse Show in New York last week then came 90 miles/145km south to compete at this competition on well-heeled Main Line Philadelphia.

The score of 77.450 per cent was their second highest freestyle result and the 20 points–the maximum available–for first place will give her a head start when the intensely competitive Western European League of nine qualifiers in which she competes begins in October.

Florida-based Denmark team pair of Mikala Gundersen and My Lady placed second on 74.750 per cent.

Arlene “Tuny” Page of Wellington, Florida on Woodstock scored 74.150 per cent for third place, a day after placing second in the Grand Prix in which the pair posted a personal best.

Canada's Jill Irving extended her unprecedented winning streak on Degas by taking the Grand Prix Special with another personal best score of 70.255 per cent. Jill and the 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding have won their three last starts, the World Cup freestyle at Saugerties, New York last week and the Grand Prix and the Special here.

Fellow Canadian Megan Lane on San D'Or was second on 67.882 per cent and Laura Noyes Putnam of Gray, Maine on Galveston third on 66.510.

SON PROHENS, Spain, Oct. 1, 2016–Madeleine Witte-Vrees of the Netherlands and Cennin posted a personal best score for the second day in a row to capture the Balearan Tour Tour CDI4* Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday.

Madeleine and the nine-year-old KWPN stallion scored 77.950 per cent for the third freestyle victory in five musical performances since the pair began Big Tour six months ago.

Madeleine and Cennin won the Grand Prix Friday with a personal best. On Saturday, the duo improved on their previous best freestyle mark of 77.650 per cent four months ago.

German 2012 Olympic medal rider Helen Langehanenberg on Damsey FRH were second on 74.975 per cent, the same placing as in the Grand Prix.

Portugal's Maria Caetano on Coroado was third on 74.000 per cent.

Madeleine competed Cennin (Vivaldi x Donnerhall) at Small Tour in 2014 and 2015 before moving to Big Tour in March.
