Udon P ridden by the U.S.-based Kelly Layne is unfit for Australia's Olympic team and is being replaced by Sue Hearn and Remmington.
Equestrian Australia announced the withdrawal of the 15-year-old KWPN gelding that had been selected with Kelly of Wellington, Florida to be on the team for the Games in Rio de Janeiro in two weeks.
“Despite being in full work following a minor injury,” the federation reported, “it was clear to Layne that her horse would not be fit in time for the Games.”
“This horse tries so hard for me and will never quit so I know I am making the right decision for him,” said Kelly, who was on the Australian team at the 2006 World Games and is married to an American. “His work under saddle is remarkable but when we jog him he is clearly uncomfortable and I would never want to jeopardize the best possible team result in Rio,” she said.
Sue Hearn and Remmington, a 14-year-old Australian-bred gelding was reserve for the team that includes Mary Hanna and Boogie Woogie and the European-based cousins Kristy Oatley on Du Soleil and Lyndal Oatley on Sandro Boy.
Sue will be making her Olympic debut at 60 years of age in Rio. She was reserve for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
She earned the right to travel to Europe with Remmington to be one of seven combinations to compete in two selection events and rode on the Australian team at the CDIO5* Nations Cup at Aachen, Germany a week ago.
Although not well known in Europe, she was well received for her friendly attitude and dedication to training.
