Carl triumphs at a successful Saumur for British riders

British combinations impressed with placings across the leaderboards at Saumur CDI3*, 25-28 September 2015, held at the legendary ‘Cadre Noir’ venue, a prestigious French military riding academy in western France.

In the big tour, a huge field of 37 riders rode in the grand prix on the Friday evening with Carl Hester partnering Coral Ingham’s chestnut gelding Wanadoo to place best of the Brits in fourth, scoring 69.66%. Carl has been unbeatable on home soil with Wanad0o, his new grand prix ride for this year, and they looked impressive at their first European show together. Anna Ross on Jane Sewell’s black mare by De Niro, Die Callas, were also well placed in seventh with 68.48%. Hayley Watson-Greaves and her own Rubins Nite was very close behind taking equal eighth with 68.26%. Henriette Andersen, riding her own and Jennifer Charlsworth’s Warlocks Charm, finished just outside of the prize money in 12th with a strong percentage of 67.70%, showing just how close the scores were in this high quality class.

Going forward to the grand prix freestyle, the music inspired the Brits to up their game. Carl and Wanadoo claimed victory with an excellent 76.75% , just stopping Anders Dahl and his grand prix winner, Wie-Atlantico De Ymas, from taking the double. Though Carl admitted on his Facebook page, “my one tempis were ‘Lost in France’”, he was “very pleased with a much improved Wanadoo” who was “a little anxious” in his first test.

Not far behind was Warlocks Charm, the Jazz-gelding ridden by Henriette Andersen, bettering his grand prix test score with 74.17% to gain equal fourth position. In sixth place, Hayley Watson-Greaves was delighted to achieve a personal best on WG Rubins Nite, also known as ‘Squeak’ at home, with 74.05%.

Two British riders contested the grand prix special, with Anna Ross and Die Callas finishing in second place on 70.53%, leading to a chuffed Anna to state, via her Facebook, that she was “over the moon with Cassie!” In 14th place was the inexperienced nine-year-old Bubblingh ridden by Richard Davison, who is back to international competition in 2015 after a two year break. The combination finished on a score of 64.49% in their grand prix special debut.

Contesting the middle tour in the inter B, a class dominated by French combinations, Matt Hicks excelled to take both fourth and tenth place. Anny Bachrach’s Excalibur took the fourth spot with Hicks on a score of 67.36%, this being their first competition abroad this year. This combination is having a top month having also finished fourth in the Monarch Equestrian Inter II Championship at the LeMieux National Championships a fortnight ago. Riding Alison Hill’s 14-year-old gelding Sheepcote Walnut to their season’s best score at this level, Matt claimed 65.01% for tenth place. Matt also took 11th on Sheepcote Walnut (65.18%) and 16th place on Excalibur (64.29%) in the inter II. Riding for Great Britain for the first time, Sarah Rogers (27) rode the 10-year-old mare Habanera into 11th with 65.02% in the inter B class. Similarly in the inter II, Sarah and Habanera scored 65.16% to take 12th position.

There was great success for the Brits competing in the small tour classes. Charlie Hutton had a particularly fruitful weekend, finishing in the top three in all of his classes on Judy Peploe’s Show Star-sired gelding, Super Blue. The on-form, eye-catching bay, also known as ‘Pepe’, had a good start to the weekend placing third in the prix st georges with 69.24% but then bettered this result with a second place in the inter I on the Saturday, breaking the 70% barrier to score 70.79%. But they didn’t stop there, also stealing second in the inter I freestyle with their best score of the weekend – 72.13%. On Charlie and his wife Abi’s Facebook page they expressed they couldn’t have asked for more from Super Blue over the weekend, who seemed to excel in the sunny Saumur atmosphere and even showed off his ‘Cadre Noir’ potential with some classical dressage style, leaping antics in the prize-giving!

Chasing Charlie throughout the small tour classes was Maria Griffin on DJ, Adrian Baker’s Diamond Hit-sired gelding. This was DJ’s first international competition on foreign soil and he came fifth in the PSG on 68.10% but, like Super Blue, surpassed this result to be placed third in both the inter I and the inter I freestyle classes.

Also in the mix in the small tour was Ben Martin on his own and Nicola Tomes’ Dimaggik a ten-year-old Dimaggio gelding. This combination took seventh in both the PSG and the inter I freestyle, much to Ben’s delight who took to his Facebook page to write “Another great day today at Saumur! Gio was great in the music. Seventh again and 67.7%, we've had such a great time.”

Other British riders to challenge the small tour classes was Nicolle Begovic on her own, German-bred Waldessarini who secured ninth in the PSG (67.34%) and eighth in the inter I (67.47%). Sarah Rogers on Frederic Winckler’s ten-year-old Rokoko also placed 14th in the PSG (66.13%) and 18th place in the inter I (63.58%).
