Bardsley in the ribbons at Biarritz CDI

British Pony rider Ottilie Bardsley has returned from south-west France, where she enjoyed success in the Pony divisions at Biarritz CDI, 8-11 October 2015.

Ottilie and her new ride, Kingsley Ciske (pictured), started their weekend with a pleasing fourth place in Friday’s Pony Team Test though it was the strong contingent from the Netherlands which dominated, taking all three podium positions - Daphne van Peperstraten took the two top spots aboard Don Camillo du Bois and Wonderful Girl, both on plus-72% scores, whilst Amber de Groot and Rhyfedd Spike came third with 70.38%. Cheshire-based Ottilie, 15, and former Dutch team pony Ciske revealed what a promising partnership they are sitting oh-so-close on an impressive 69%.

The next day, Ottilie and her mother Sharon’s talented gelding, a good-looking 11-year-old by Composer van de Beekerheide maintained their form and rode an accomplished test which earned 69.02%, qualifying them for Sunday’s kür. Again, it was van Peperstraten who secured the two top places but this time she partnered Wonderful Girl, an eight-year-old daughter of Wimbledon, to top honours.

Sunday dawned – freestyle day - and time for the young riders to display their creativity and verve. The British combination showed glimpses of their bright future achieving an impressive third place with 71.97% - their best freestyle mark to date. Van Peperstraten and Wonderful Girl headed the leaderboard with 76.52% with compatriot Amber de Groot and Rhyfedd Spike earning 74.47% to separate Ottilie and the victor.

“We have just returned from the most incredible week at CDI Biarritz as the only competitors from Great Britain in the whole competition,” said a delighted Ottilie via her Facebook page. “On the Friday it was the pony team test and it was our first time competing for a couple of months. We finished with a pleasing score of 69% and a 4th place.

“On the Saturday it was the individual test. Ciske was going much better this day but sadly he got a bit tense in the walk but we still finished with 69% and a fifth place. This qualified us for the Kur. Ciske was feeling amazing on the day of the Kur and we finished with 71.9%, a new PB, and a third place.

“This week has been so much fun and a great learning experience as we have come away with lots of things to improve on. Thank you so much to the selectors for giving me the opportunity to ride at such a fab show.”
