American Celebrity Mare Rafalca Gives Birth to Filly

Rafalca with her newborn filly.

MOORPARK, California, April 30, 2016–Rafalca, the celebrity mare now 19 years old and ridden by Jan Ebeling for the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games, on Saturday gave birth to her first foal, a filly.

Both mother and baby, not yet named, were reported by Amy Ebeling as doing well at The Acres in Moorpark, north of Los Angeles.

The sire was Connaisseur, a dressage stallion that placed third in the 2011 and sixth in the 2012 Pavo Cups with Emmelie Scholtens of the Netherlands. Connaisseur is owned by Sara Pocock and is approved in Germany as Westfalen, in Holland as KWPN, Sweden as ASVH and also is a Belgian Warmblood.

Rafalca, and Oldenburg mare (Argentinius x Rubinestein) became the center of attention in 2012 because of the ownership by the “Three Amigos” of Ann Romney, whose husband Mitt Romney was the Republican candidate for president; Amy Ebeling, wife of Jan, and Beth Meyer who with her husband is an of American high performance dressage and eventing horses.

In addition to the London Olympics, Jan rode Rafalca in three World Cup Finals–in Las Vegas in 2009, Leipzig, Germany in 2011 and 's-Hertogenbosh, Netherlands in 2o12.

The mare became a celebrity linked to the ownership group. The German-born Jan ignored to ride through the turmoil of an American presidential election campaign, unrelenting television comedy skits and vilified by partisan media and a Democrat White House that attempted to portray Rafalca as a symbol of privilege and wealth though Ann Romney spoke out about her involvement in dressage through therapeutic riding that helped her deal with the crippling effects of multiple schlerosis.

Rafalca was retired in a ceremony under the lights at the inaugural Central Park Horse Show in New York in 2014.

WARENDORF, Germany, April 26, 2016–Don Johnson FRH and Bella Rose, the two top horses for Isabell Werth will be out of contention for the German team for the summer Olympics because of what the German federation on Tuesday described as “long-term injuries.”

The 15-year-old Hanoverian gelding Don Johnson FRH has been on the injured list since the World Cup Final in Gothenbirg, Sweden last month.

Bella Rose, the 12 year old Westfalen mare that was on the German gold medal team at the 2014 World Games, has not recovered enough to go back into the top level of sport since the last competition in November, 2014.

“Don Johnson will need about three to four months until his injury is fully cured and it can start in professional sports again,” said Isabell, a five-time Olympian for Germany.

“And Bella Rose has not yet reached the necessary stability and consistency that would be needed for tournament sport.

“For me this is a huge disappointment, especially since both horses were on a hopeful course.”

Isabell can, however, seek to qualify Weihegold OLD and Emilio for the Rio de Janeiro Games in August.

“I will now contest with Emilio and Weihegold OLD, with the full support of my rider Beatrice Buchwald, in Olympic qualifications,” Isabell said. “With these two I have two great horses available that will hopefully prove so in sport as in the past tournaments.”

Isabell competed Weihegold, an 11-year-old Oldenburg mare, for a Grand Prix score of 80.020 per cent two months ago. On Emilio, a 10-year-old Westfalen gelding, Isabell began international Grand Prix last September.

Kristina Bröring-Sprehe and Desperados FRH is the top ranked German combination and No. 1 in the world while Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on Unee BB is fifth on the world standings. The 21-year-old Sönke Rothenberger on Cosmo has emerged as a standout partnership this year. Olympic riders Anabel Balkenhol on Dablino and Dorothee Schneider on Showtime as well as World Games team rider Fabienne Lütkemeier on D'Agostino are also ranked within the top 25 in the world.

Under-25 European Championships Switched to Hagen from Ankum

FEI LOGO

April 25, 2016

The inaugural Under-25 European Championships have been switched to Hagen from Ankum in Germany, but the date remains the same at June 16-19, a week after the youth Nations Cup competition also at Hagen.

The FEI, International Equestrian Federation, said Monday the change was made “for organizational reasons and in order to offer the best possible conditions for the competitors.'  A scarcity of hotel rooms in the Ankum area was one reason cited by some national federations.

Hagen is the venue for the annual Horses & Dreams international event in spring as well as the Nations Cups tournament for ponies, children, junior and young riders June 7-12.

MILL SPRING, North Carolina, April 23, 2016–Chris von Martels, newly anointed Canadian Equestrian Athlete of 2015, claimed his first victory on Divertimento Saturday winning the inaugural Tryon CDI3* Grand Prix Special with a personal best score.

The score of 70.490 per cent for Chris and the 14-year-old Westfalen mare that led a Canadian sweep of the top four places surpassed their previous best of 70.314 per cent set at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington at the beginning of April.

“From the way he felt in the ride,” Chris said, “it was his best test so far. The horse has tremendous quality and ability. Tinne (VilhelmsonSilfvén, the former rider) has proven that many times with top results. With a bit more time and a bit more training the two of us can better our points significantly.”

Karen Pavicic on Don Daiquiri, that competed for Canada at the 2014 World Games in Normandy, placed second on 69.745 per cent that was enough to give the pair a slight edge over Chris and Divertimento in the Canadian rankings to determine the two combinations to start at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August. Belinda Trussell on Anton has a clear lead with a little over two months of qualifying to go.

Megan Lane on Caravella was third on 69.218 per cent, as they were in the Grand Prix.

Ashley Holzer on Dressed in Black made it an all Canadian victory parade at this first international dressage competition here by taking the Grand Prix Freestyle on a score of 71.502 per cent a day after capturing the Grand Prix in the pair's first CDI in more than a year.

Lindsay Kellock and Royal Prinz logged their first CDI victory in winning the Intermediate I, a day after the Canadian rider celebrated her 26th birthday.

Lindsay, the only Canadian among the six starting combinations, and the 15-year-old Oldenburg stallion scored 67.684 per cent.

The selection of Chris as the Equine Canada Athlete of 2015 was a result of his team silver and individual bronze medals on Zilverstar at Small Tour at last year's Pan American Games.

Divertimento became his prospect as an Olympic mount at the start of the year through an agreement with the owner, Antonia Ax:son Johnson and her Lövsta Stuteri and the former rider Sweden's six-time Olympian Tinne VilhelmsonSilfvén who trained and competed the horse at Big Tour from late 2011 through mid-2015.

Chris said he expressed an interest Divertimento in early 2015 but Tinne was still competing the horse as well as her Swedish team mount, Don Auriello. Last fall, however, Tinne asked Chris if he was still interested and an agreement was reached for him to compete the horse for Canada.

“They have been very supportive,” Chris said. “I couldn't ask for them to be any more supportive and generous and truly wanting it to be successful. It's very nice to see both a rider and an owner interested in the betterment of the sport globally and not only for their own nation. It's truly amazing. That we share the same vision and goals makes it a lot of fun.”

Chris plans to compete in Ottawa May 19-22 before heading to Europe to train with his long time coach, Sjef Janssen. He hopes to compete at Rotterdam, one of the top shows in Europe and two weeks before Canada's July 4 Olympic qualifying deadline.

“I feel the best environment to prepare for the Olympics if I am selected is to be in Europe, in a world class environment amongst the best of the best. I'm a firm believer you need to put yourself in that environment if you want to play with big boys.”

MILL SPRING, North Carolina, April 22, 2016–Canada's four-time Olympian Ashley Holzer competed Dressed in Black for the first time in more than a year Friday to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural CDI3* at the Tryon International Equestrian Center on which tens of millions of dollars are being spent to create one of the world's most amazing show grounds.

Ashley and Dressed in Black scored 70.320 per cent to top the field of 11 combinations of which seven were Canadians seeking scores to qualify for the country's two individual starting places at the summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Most Canadian pairs except for thew top ranked Belinda Trussell on Anton contending for an Olympic berth competed here following three months of shows over winter at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida.

This was only the fourth Big Tour Grand Prix for Ashley and the 11-year-old Westfalen gelding but their last competition was at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida in March, 2015.

Chris von Martels, the 2015 Pan American Games team silver and individual bronze medalist, placed second on 69.880 per cent that moved the pair up to second place on the unofficial Canadian Olympic rankings compiled by dressage news-com for combinations that have completed the required four Grand Prix and Special tests.

Megan Lane on Caravella was third on 68.580 per cent. The pair earned one of the two Olympic starts for Canada based on rankings within the North American Olympic group that goes to the nation and not the individual,

Ashley, who is based in Wellington and New York City, made it clear she will not push Dressed in Black or Arthur that she also rode in the Grand Prix for sixth place to make a team spot.

“It's OK to have incredible personal dreams but you need to have realistic goals,” she said.

Dressed in Black achieved a major goal in the Grand Prix, though, by handling what Ashley described as an  electric atmosphere in the George H. Morris centerpiece arena that was built to be able to handle top international jumping events.

“We've never seen a big ring like this,” she said. “There were not a ton of people but there was a lot of atmosphere. I'm thrilled with the way he handled himself. In fact, he went in there as a team player. It's the nicest feeling that instead of being scared he was confident and it felt like he was trying his best.”

Chris von Martels said that Divertimento, the 14-year-old Westfalen gelding that was competed until this year by Sweden's six-time Olympian Tinne VilhelmsonSilfvén, said the pair succeeded in riding a clean accurate test.

“We have a new level of confidence, and we will move ahead maintaining the accuracy and add a little more dynamics.”

Both Ashley and Chris plan to compete at the Ottawa CDI3* May 19-22 before heading to Europe.

By KENNETH J. BRADDICK

Years of hard work and drive have catapulted college student Lauren Asher to the top tier of United States Young Riders with her De Noir and a prospect for an American team to compete in Europe this summer.

Lauren and De Noir, bought seven months ago after success at Small Tour ridden by Mette Rosencrantz, in three months have jumped into second place on the U.S. European Tour rankings and to 60th in the world rankings of 322 Young Rider combinations from not being on the standings at the beginning of the year.

In seven CDI starts this year, Lauren and De Noir, a 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding, have logged five victories and two second places.

The U.S. Equestrian Federation this week is expected to name three combinations to compete in Young Rider events in Europe including the Nations Cup in Hagen, Germany June 7-12. At the top of the rankings is Barbara “Bebe” Davis of Wellington, Florida on Feivel Mousekewitz.

Lauren transplanted herself to Southern California in 2015 to study business at the University of San Diego and to pursue her passion for riding, works with David Blake at nearby Encinitas..

Although her family, including an older sister, was not into horses Lauren began riding Hunt seat when she was five years old, then dabbled in Western before jumpers while living in the well-to-do Denver area community of Greenwood Village. She first tried dressage at the age of 11 when her jumper coach was off having a baby.

In 2010, she began competing at beginner levels of dressage and four years later was riding in CDIs in Colorado and went to the North American Junior Championships on her Lysias with the team from the region that includes Colorado but stretches from the Canadian border in the north to Mexico in the south. She went back to the championships as a Young rider with Lysias, an Oldenburg gelding then eight years old, the next year.

While keeping an eye out for another horse, her friend Veronica West, a California junior, told her about De Noir that Mette Rosencrantz had campaigned at Small Tour seeking a place on the 2015 U.S. Pan American Games team.

“Everything with De Noir just seemed to click from the beginning,” Lauren recalled.

She described De Noir (De Niro x Matcho AA) as “a real character and very intelligent. He was a breeding stallion in Denmark for a long time, so sometimes he still thinks he's a stallion and can be a handful, but that is also nice in some ways, as he loves to show off, and I really adore that about him. He is my best friend, and I spoil him quite a bit. He loves his job and tries very hard for me, so I always take the best care of him possible to help make up for everything he gives to me. He also has to be one of the most gorgeous horses I have ever seen, and he for sure knows that, too. In his eyes and mine, he is a 'total 10'!”

Success in the competition arena with him was not a surprise to Lauren who said she has made a lot of sacrifices on the journey to where she is now.

“The day in and day out has not always been easy or glamorous,” she told dressage-news.com, “but I alwasy believed in myself and knew I could do it. I have always worked extremely hard and been incredibly focused on my goals. I am a determined and driven person, which has helped me motor through adversity such as a shooting at my high school in Colorado in 2013 or driving three hours in my car through Denver traffic to Boulder every day after school to go ride. and still go on to chase after and accomplish my goals.

“Things were not always easy to this point but I kept on trying and when one approach wasn't working I never gave up or stopped believing in myself but just re-assessed and tried a different approach until I finally found one that worked.”

Along the way, she has been to Europe several times and has good friends in the Netherlands. She loves learning languages that so far includes Dutch, French and Spanish and is working on adding German and Danish. She likes to watch videos in Dutch and follow riders she admires–Adelinde Cornelissen, Emmellie Scholtens, Hans Peter Minderhoud and Kirsten Brouwer as well as Carl Hester and Isabell Werth.

“I for sure would like to make a career out of this,” Lauren said. “It is the thing that gets me out of bed every morning. I hope to one day have a business where I can combine my language skills with my training and competing.”

MILL SPRING, North Carolina, April 18, 2016–Ashley Holzer and Dressed in Black head up a group of Canadian Olympic hopefuls at the inaugural Tryon International CDI3* as she seeks to earn a start at at what would be her fifth Olympic Games.

The Grand Prix with 12 U.S. and Canadian horses and riders on a full slate of FEI levels is offering prize money of $38,500, the most in North America outside Florida's Global Dressage Festival so far this year.

A companion national show has received almost 90 entries for the Tryon show grounds that were formally opened last year. Tens of millions of dollars have been invested by a partnership led by Mark Bellissimo who also heads up the group that owns the Global dressage circuit, the Winter Equestrian Festival, the Wanderers Club of golf, tennis and polo and this week is scheduled to complete the purchase of the International Polo Club, all in Wellington.

The Tryon International Equestrian Center is the anchor for Tryon Resort, a  1,400-acre sports complex of an 18-hole golf course, 175-room hotel, 90 condominium units and a spa to complement the horse show calendar that until now has been centered on jumpers and hunters.

The Tryon Equestrian Partners ownership group announced last week that it acquired the historic Cleghorn Plantation Golf & Country Club 6.5 miles from the horse show.

Along with the New York-based Ashley who has also entered Arthur in the Grand Prix will be fellow Canadian 2016 Olympic hopefuls Chris von Martels on Divertimento, Brittany Fraser on All In, Megan Lane on Caravella, Karen Pavicic on Don Daiquiri and Shannon Dueck on Cantaris.

Ashley began competing Dressed in Black at Big Tour three years ago. The 11-year-old Westfalen stallion has not competed in a CDI in more than a year.

The deadline is early July for combinations seeking to fill the two individual places for Canada at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

United States combinations in the Grand Prix include Catherine Haddad-Staller on Mane Stream Hotmail, Katie Poag on Zonnekoning, James Koford on both Don Principe and Rhett and Nora Batchelder on Bahai.
