LEXINGTON, Kentucky, Nov. 6, 2015–Gwen Poulin rode William to the US Dressage Final Grand Prix Championship Friday with her father, Michael, on Thor M runnerup in the third year of the annual event.
Gwen, 34 years old, is less than half the age of her father, Michael, aged 70, who rode Graf George on the United States bronze medal team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
Gwen and the 12-year-old KWPN gelding scored 68.533 per cent for the victory while Michael on Thor M scored 68.400 per cent. Heather Mason of Tewksbury, New Jersey on Zar placed third on 67.467 per cent.
The Poulin family is based out of De Leon near Orlando in central Florida. Kate Poulin, who is a year older than her sister Gwen, rode Brilliant Too on the U.S. team that won gold at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2007.
“He was on fire,” Gwen said after the ride, “it was just awesome.”
Belinda Nairn-Wertman, the owner, called Gwen 2 1/2 years ago to offer her the ride on William.
“I never turn down an opportunity because you never know how it can turn out and what you can learn from it.” she said. “We really clicked–he’s very sensitive and emotional, so I’ve taken my time with him so that he wouldn’t feel too much pressure. And now he offers everything to me, and it makes my heart so happy that I can’t help but grin from ear to ear.”
Her father, who is battling Lyme disease, was gracious in defeat. “I’m so proud of her, she hung in there and fought for it,” Michael said. “It was beautiful, and it means more to me for her to win.”
About 370 combinations from 36 states are competing at the third annual US Dressage Finals created to provide a showcase of adult amateur and open competitions for horses and riders who qualified from Training level through Grand Prix at nine regional championships this Fall.
These championships are unrelated to the Dutta Corp. Grand Prix and Intermediate national championships scheduled for the Global Dressage Festival grounds in Wellington, Florida next month.
