Streaming of live video from all judges’ locations with the ability for replays will be available to spectators at the World Dressage Masters CDI4* in Roosendaal, Netherlands this week in an effort to improve transparency at dressage competitions.

The project implemented by the Dutch company Match through its VoGo Sport app for smartphones and tablets is being promoted as innovative by seeing rides “through the eyes of the judge.”

The app will enable switching between cameras at each of the judges’ positions, replays and ability to compare scores. The app is available on the App Store and Google Play.

Communications links from the Roosendaal show grounds, 28 miles/45km south of Rotterdam, are not capable of multiple video signals so the application will be available only to spectators at the venue.

A stand-alone WiFi network is being installed at Roosendaal to provide enough bandwidth so all the camera positions can be streamed simultaneously to a smartphone or tablet.

The rides will not be archived, but could be in the future.

The Roosendaal application is the latest effort to utilize technology in jury sports to provide more transparency and help make dressage more understandable to spectators.

The World Equestrian Festival CHIO at Aachen, Germany for the past two years has utilized a smartphone/tablet app developed with the international software giant SAP to enable spectators to view dressage rides and award marks for individual movements. A similar application was prepared by SAP for equitation competitions at the Washington International Horse Show in October.

An International Dressage Riders Club survey released early this year found that spectators consider subjectivity and lack of transparency in judging the biggest problems in modern international dressage.

Wim de Vrankrijker, Business Developer of VoGo Sport said: “We at MATCH, together with VoGo Sport, are always looking for innovative techniques to provide new and interesting information to visitors at events. This will make a sport, especially sports that involve judging, much more transparent for the spectators.”

Match has been involved in several sports at local up to continental and world championship levels in Europe and North America.

The VoGo app, Wim said, has up to eight inputs and replays are available for all camera positions.

Development is underway in another sport to display animation of an exercise, an aspect that has been talked about for dressage to show how a particular movement should be performed on a split screen of an actual performance.

“There are all kinds of ideas and existing applications,” he said. “The biggest problem is the way it can be published for the spectators. By using the VoGo app this part is solved.”

The 2016 dressage Nations Cup series will launch next March at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida to kick off a lineup of seven events, six in Europe, after three years of testing.

Odense, Denmark and Compiègne, France will be new to the schedule that also includes Rotterdam, Netherlands; Falsterbo, Sweden; Aachen, Germany and Hickstead, England.

The lineup of Nations Cup events recommended by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Dressage Committee will go to the FEI Bureau for approval next month.

If the schedule is approved, the seven events will be the most since the FEI launched the “test” series in 2013 with four events in Europe–Wellington staged a Nations Cup that year but it was not part of the series. Six events were held in 2014 and 2015.

As many as 19 nations competed in events during the three-year “test” period, among them Australia, Canada, Colombia, South Africa and the United States in addition to 14 teams from Western and Central Europe.

The Netherlands won the series in 2013 and 2014 and Germany in 2015.

Rotterdam, Aachen and Hickstead were on the calendar for all three test years.

Under the format for 2016, countries can field teams with a minimum of three horses and riders and a maximum of four combinations and compete in as many Nations Cups as they want but points from only four shows will count for the final series ranking.

Wellington was officially part of the series for two years, the first non-championship Nations Cup in the Western Hemisphere. The team format of mixed Big and Small Tour combinations for the Pan American Games in 2015 was developed using the Nations Cup at Global.

For 2016, Compiegne, Rotterdam, Falsterbo and Aachen are rated as CDIO5*, the highest level with minimum prize money of €20,000/US$21,300 while Wellington, Odense and Hickstead will be CDIO3*s with a minimum purse of €10,000/US$10,650. The Wellington organizers provided a purse of $35,000 for its Nations Cup competitions.

The format for the 2019 Pan Ams has not yet been decided but when it is, said Thomas Baur, sports manager of the Global circuit, it will be applied in Florida for development over the next four years.

The calendar of Nations Cup events for 2016:
1. Mar. 29-April 3 – Wellington, Florida – CDIO3*
2. May 12-15 – Odense, Denmark – CDIO3*
3. May 19-22 – Compiegne, France – CDIO5*
4. June 22-26 – Rotterdam, Netherlands – CDIO5*
5. July 7-10 Falsterbo, Sweden – CDIO5*
6. July 13-17 – Aachen, Germany – CDIO5*
7. July 28-31 Hickstead, England – CDIO3*

STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 20, 2015–Beatriz Ferrer-Salat and Delgado, with one World Cup victory already to their credit this season, won the Stuttgart German Masters Grand Prix qualifier Friday in a third straight victorious performance by the Spanish pair.

Continuing the resurgence in what had been a career marked more by injury setbacks than successes until last August’s European Championships Freestyle bronze medal, Beatriz and the 14-year-old Westfalen gelding scored 78.440 per cent for the win.

Germany’s Isabell Werth, undoubtedly the most popular rider at this prestigious indoor event, placed second on Don Johnson FRH on 77.700 per cent with her European Championships team mate Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB, this year’s World Cup Final bronze medalist, third on 76.960 per cent.

Beatriz and Delgado, No. 7 in the world, will be seeking their second consecutive World Cup Freestyle Saturday following their success in the qualifier at Lyon, France last month that kicked off their campaign for a start in the individual championship finale in Gothenburg, Sweden next April.
